Following an undercover operation by police, three men, including a doctor, were arrested in Miami for illegally billing an insurance company for patients who never were treated.

“This goes on all the time,” the individual working undercover as the patient explained. “To be honest, this type of behavior has reached epidemic proportions. It’s happening all over the country and affecting everybody and everything, including insurance rates.”

While there are many types of insurance fraud—ranging from the above example to staged car accidents—there’s a more subtle type of fraud occuring. Failure to divulge prior injuries and repeated claims for the same injury cost insurance companies millions of dollars every year. It also raises the rates as much as the more blatant cases previously mentioned.

For example, one of the nation’s biggest retailers is sued two to five times a day. That’s right—a day! I’m fairly certain many of those people actually suffered some type of injury. Many, however, are viewing the retailor as an easy mark because of its size.

With the help of positive identifiers, we find all the addresses a claimant has reported. Then we can search area hospitals and MRI facilities. These are the most common places for ER treatment and MRI studies ordered by physicians, including chiropractors.

While we don’t obtain actual privacy-protected medical information, we can determine when and where the subject was treated. Then records can be ordered with a release or subpoena. We also can tie these treatment dates to other accidents we found through Department of Motor Vehicle records and other sources.

So don’t settle that claim until you let Inter-Facts level the playing field! Our privacy compliant hospital canvas is the most accurate in the business.

Look Out for Bogus Background Investigations

The term “Background Investigations” is probably one of the most misunderstood phrases since the emergence of the Internet. Just type it into any search engine and see what comes up. Paid ads top the list. Some say you can have a background investigation performed for $20. Others claim to rate background investigation sites.

While many of these sites are legitimate, others perpetuate the myth that there’s a crystal ball in cyber space with all the information you need to know about anyone—all for $20! Some boast flashing colors, sliding graphics and warnings about the “confidential” information you’re about to receive or even claim to reveal arrest records.

Don’t be duped by these misconceptions!

Who Do You Trust?

True background investigations require an investigator who knows where and how to look for the information.

The first thing you need is a positive identification. That’s easier said than done. Try running the name Joe Smith through one of those “crystal ball” sites. Even if you know what city he lives in, you won’t be able to positively identify him. If you can provide a licensed investigator with a date of birth or at least an address, they can verify the identity through databases available only to them. These databases combine public records and the reported address information from credit reporting agencies. Please note: Confidential credit information is not available to investigators.

Once the subject is positively identified, the investigator can review the address history to determine where to look. Typically, the most important information can be found in courthouses.

The majority of flashy background sites boast criminal records as being most important. That’s not necessarily true. While it’s good to know if the subject of your background investigation is a felon, a wealth of information can be found in misdemeanor, civil and family courts.

These types of records tell a lot about your subject, including whether:

  • felony cases were pled down to misdemeanors;
  • they have a history of civil litigation;
  • they were sued by landlords, credit companies or medical providers;
  • they were divorced, maybe multiple times;
  • there was a record of domestic abuse or failure to pay child support; and/or
  • they filed bankruptcies, maybe multiple times.

Oftentimes people are involved in many types of these cases as the victim. They may be charged or sued, even when they’ve done nothing wrong.

A licensed Investigator can evaluate these cases and tell you in more detail if the subject has been creating their own problems. Know that whether you’re right or wrong, if you’ve been accused of something you must answer your accuser.

The number of deceitful date background check websites is staggering. The majority of them toy with your safety. They promise to deliver details of someone’s background that simply can’t be obtained through public records.

The newest to provide misinformation is a company that claims to “certify” a person as being safe for dating. Its website is beautiful. It’s obvious that a lot of money was spent on design and marketing. Unfortunately, the site is dangerous. It claims to perform a background check on you, with your permission of course, and allows you to be “safe date certified.” The problem is their background check doesn’t uncover anything.

They may check courts where you live but not those surrounding previous addresses. They don’t even show a history of bankruptcy, which IS a matter of public record. Wouldn’t you want to know if someone you’re dating has a history of financial issues that required filing for bankruptcy? While many times it’s filed due to circumstances beyond the person’s control, there are times when it’s used as a financial tool and sometimes fraudulently.

For example: I asked a relative to join an unnamed site and become “certified” as someone who’s “safe” to date. They found nothing! In fact, he passed the test even though he’d been charged with a felony in his county of residence. Does that sound like a “safe date” to you?

This is just the latest in Internet marketing scams. Others compile online public records, sell them for $9.99 and make you believe you’re doing a background check. In most cases, however, you get don’t get anything.

Many of these deceptive sites claim to check criminal records in all 50 states. That can’t be done by a private investigator. I know. I am one.

The bottom line is these alleged “date background check” sites, for the most part, misrepresent the truth. They’re designed to lull you into a false sense of security when it comes to finding out who that potential date really is.

Before you trust your personal safety to a company that makes false claims, call Dating Backgrounds and speak with a licensed private detective.

Be wary of online companies claiming to be able to check national criminal and civil records. It’s impossible.

The latest advertisers claim they can search criminal records nationwide for $6. Truth is, it simply can’t be done! These companies are making false statements that can conceivably get someone injured or killed.

In a 2013 survey, more than 50 percent of participants complained of having received a misleading profile. Some people create entirely false profiles to entrap unsuspecting victims. One example is “Catfishing." This ploy cost online daters $50.4 million in losses in 2011 alone.

False Claims Abound

Dating Backgrounds has run searches through many of these companies on multiple individuals known to have criminal records. First, they rarely positively identify the person being searched. Second, these searches come up empty when it comes to records. Let’s face it. How do you know you have the correct, say Robert Johnson if there’s no date of birth, Social Security number, etc.?

Many criminal records are maintained at the county level so that’s where you need to look. Some states, such as Michigan, offer statewide criminal searches for $10 with a subscription. It doesn’t seem plausible that a company would spend $10 to search state records and only charge you $6.

What if you purchase a date background check on Mr. or Mrs. Right, who is a violent criminal, and that $6 search company doesn’t find it?

Civil records are a completely different. They’re more difficult to identify since there isn’t a date of birth on these filings. Typically, the only way to identify a subject on most civil filings is through an address. That can’t be found on an Internet search so you may have to dig deep in the file to get it.

The bottom line is anyone can buy a web address and claim to do date background check for a nominal fee. Unfortunately, many still believe the Internet is like a crystal ball. You can find out anything about anyone with a click of a mouse. In most instances, however, the result is a false claim, whether it be date background checks or any other background check.

Legitimate Background Investigations are an Important Tool in Reducing Insurance Fraud

In March 2015, the Insurance Information Institute announced that industry-wide fraud has an annual price tag of $32 billion. That’s right! Billion with a “B.”

Reports confirm that insurance fraud accounts for roughly 10 percent of all property/casualty losses and it can get as high as 20 percent for auto insurers. Proper background investigations could save the insurance industry one billion of that, if not more. Not an investigation conducted by a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) but rather by a bonafide background investigator. That’s because quite often the SIUs aren’t aware of the various avenues available to assist in mitigating claims.

Make a Positive Identification

The first—and most important—step in background investigations is making a positive identification. Don’t depend on a defense attorney to help. They’re notorious for providing little to no information about a claimant and oftentimes the information is incorrect. They also have been known to supply medical records with conflicting birth dates. As a result, it’s difficult to know exactly who you’re looking at.

Then there are the subscription database companies, another source of convoluted information containing multiple birth dates and Social Security numbers. Background investigations should rely on at least three different data providers in order to do the job correctly. Assuming the only database you use is correct is just that—an assumption.

Once you have a positive ID on your claimant the work begins. If your search has been done correctly you’ll know where to look.

Running a Claims Search

Running a claims search is another great tool. Unfortunately, if the subject has been involved in a claim that was never entered into the system, it won’t be in the database. If you run the individual’s Social Security number through the claims database and come up short, how will you know if the last adjuster even inputted the number? You won’t. You won’t find the prior claim either.

You also have to contend with data providers who claim to check criminal and civil records. Inexperienced claims personnel frequently assume that the comprehensive report mentions criminal records. When nothing shows up they assume—again—that there are no criminal records. The problem is these data providers only scratch the surface when running a criminal search. For the most part, their results come from compiled public records.

Interpreting the Results

Once birth dates and Social Security numbers have been identified you’ll have an address history that will tell you where to look.

For example, if a claimant resides in Chicago’s Cook County, the only way to check the county’s civil and criminal records is to actually go to the courts and look! While there usually are positive identifiers on criminal records, you won’t find a birth date on most civil filings. Many times the only identifier is an address, which usually is enough.

Behavior patterns can show up in a variety of places, including:

  • court records
  • multiple lawsuits, including claims for injuries
  • financial problems
  • history of violence
  • criminal and protective orders found in conjunction with divorces.

All these behaviors can provide insight into your claimant and give you leverage when it comes time for a settlement conference.

Medical Canvas

If a claimant has had prior treatment for the same or similar injury, you need to know! In many cases, we have seen claimants treat several days before your loss. Hospital checks are useful for this type of occurrence. While we cannot access confidential medical records, we can tell you where and when they treated. Detailed treatment information can then be obtained with a release. Do not miss this opportunity to discover prior injury.

According to a recent FBI report, in 2014 dating scammers robbed Americans of $82 million—and that was just in the first half of the year.

That leads me to ask why more people don’t protect themselves with a date background check. More important, why don’t daters educate themselves as to what a background check really is?

Contrary to popular belief, not everything on the Internet is true, especially when it comes to date background checks. Many of the individuals portrayed in dating profiles are not who they claim to be. These fraudulent profiles are set up to lure you in. Some predators use dating sites to take advantage of individuals, whether it be by committing fraud, running financial scams or, in some cases, inflicting harm on those they meet online.

While it is human nature to believe otherwise and give people the benefit of the doubt, we are often disappointed. In our search for love and companionship. We want to believe it’s all true. Unfortunately, our vulnerability and loneliness prohibit us from seeing the red flags.

Practice Due Diligence

Nearly all the big dating services do nothing to verify the information of someone you may be interested in.

So how do you know if what (or who) you see is the real deal? YOU have the power to date safely and protect yourself and your loved ones by conducting a dating background check.

A licensed professional has access to information that automated websites don’t. Dating Backgrounds’ license allows us to verify whether the person behind the profile is from this country and not a foreigner attempting to run a financial scam or someone who’s been convicted of drunk driving or had a restraining order issued against them.

We Know Where to Look

At Dating Backgrounds, our background investigations are performed by Inter-Facts, Inc., a licensed private detective agency with extensive experience in researching and preparing custom background reports.

We have access to proprietary databases that allow us to positively identify the search subject. That assures us that any information we find actually pertains to the person you want investigated.

If you are looking for a dating background check, that is.

Don’t believe me? See for yourself.

Go ahead and Google date background check or background check. The first thing you will see are paid advertisements, the most outrageous of which is a site that rates the “10 Best Background Checks.” That’s right; a paid ad that recommends the company offering the best background check!

Several “top sites” on Google’s coveted first page claim to provide a complete background check for $19, state and local criminal records included. It’s important to know that public records brokers do not have access to this information.

If a criminal conviction comes to light during one of these searches, it most likely originated from a site like mugshots.com, a registered sex offender database or other public sources. While somewhat enlightening, the results barely scratch the surface of what someone might find by examining court records or through a subscription-only database where only a licensed Private Detective is allowed access.

In addition, many of these alleged background check sites charge your credit card every month because somewhere in the fine print it says you agreed to a membership.

We Know Where to Look

At Dating Backgrounds, our background investigations are performed by Inter-Facts, Inc., a licensed private detective agency with extensive experience in conducting background checks.

We have access to restricted databases that allow us to positively identify the search subject. That assures us that any information we find actually pertains to the person you want us to investigate.

Another thing to understand is that automated date background check services don’t check civil records.  More information about someone’s history can be uncovered in civil filings than in criminal records. Not many people have criminal convictions. You’d be surprised, however, at what you may discover in civil courts: bankruptcies, evictions, default in child support orders, money judgments, injury suits, divorces and protective orders, DUI’s.

Some sites claim to check marriage records. How do they do that, since they are maintained by the county?  While there are states that provide these records, you need both partners’ names and the date and the state where they were married.  It’s impossible to “search” marriage records with only one name.

The Personal Touch

Our private investigators bring a human element to your search, unlike the faceless online providers who promise an "instant" background check. These companies simply scour the Internet for free public record information. In many cases, the results are outdated or filled with information you likely already knew.

We know that a good search requires legwork! Our licensed private investigators know how to search the appropriate courthouses and records to get the information you need to protect yourself.

Dating Backgrounds delivers a more in-depth, comprehensive background check than other websites or companies that claim to do the same. Our dating background searches are never invasive. Privacy laws DO NOT allow us to provide our clients with personal identifiers, such as dates of birth or Social Security numbers. Instead, we use these "behind the scenes" identifiers to confirm that the person you’re considering having a relationship with is who they say they are. Then we positively identify them in our thorough Dating Background Check reports.

Trust in Us

We’re committed to protecting our clients. Our licensed private investigators have the resources and know-how to compile the most accurate, up-to-date background reports on the person you want to date. Dating Backgrounds doesn’t sell you useless or deceiving information. We will give you the knowledge you need to make educated decisions regarding the person you want to date.

So before you trust your personal safety to a company that makes false claims, call Dating Backgrounds and speak with a licensed private detective.

As an online dater, you have absolutely NO protection from some sketchy individuals who use dating sites to perpetrate fraud, run financial scams and, in some cases, cause actual harm to those people they meet online.

Just read the fine print tucked away in the corners of such sites or buried in a sea of “Terms and Conditions.”  Here’s one example, excerpted from a highly popular dating site:

“STEP 2

Check with law enforcement. Most United States municipalities have online databases to search incarcerations. You can access records to see if your potential beau has been arrested or incarcerated. These databases will return the information on someone's conviction, the time he served in prison and the conditions of his release.”

If you read that statement closely, it’s almost comical.  The dating site is suggesting that its subscribers seek out local police records.  I can just imagine Joe Dater walking into the local Police station and asking if their potential love interest has a criminal record. They won’t even disclose that information to me! And I have a Private Detective license!!

What’s even more ironic is that a date background check among civil court records (divorces, protection orders, bankruptcies, judgments, lawsuits, etc.) can provide more insight into a persons character than a criminal record check.

Here’s another excerpt from another dating site, which actually contradicts itself if you read it carefully:

“YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER MEMBERS. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THE COMPANY CURRENTLY DOES NOTC ONDUCT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS OR SCREENINGS ON ITS MEMBERS. THE COMPANY ALSO DOES NOT INQUIRE INTO THE BACKGROUNDS OF ALL OF ITS MEMBERS OR ATTEMPT TO VERIFY THE STATEMENTS OF ITS MEMBERS. THE COMPANY MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES AS TO THE CONDUCT OF MEMBERS OR THEIR COMPATIBILITY WITH ANY CURRENT OR FUTURE MEMBERS. THE COMPANY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CONDUCT ANY CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK OR OTHER SCREENINGS (SUCH AS SEX OFFENDER REGISTER SEARCHES), AT ANY TIME AND USING AVAILABLE PUBLIC RECORDS.”

The bottom line is that most, if not all, dating sites don’t want to address the issue of safety and checking backgrounds because, as one website executive told me, “it might be bad for business.”

My question – as self-interested as it may seem, but nonetheless valid – is why don’t online dating sites embrace the notion of date background checks?  And, in doing so, forge mutually beneficial relationships with firms like ours that offer quality searches conducted by licensed, professional private investigators?

Some may view my questions above as shameless self-promotion.  I would have to disagree.  Our company is committed to the protection of all online daters – young and old, male and female, gay and straight – and online dating sites should embrace that commitment as well.

Without a doubt, online dating can be complicated and a bit nerve-wracking.  So why not take the necessary steps to protect yourself…and potentially your loved ones, your home, your possessions and more?

If your favorite online dating site won’t, then you can.  But only consider the services of licensed private investigators who have the resources and know-how to compile the most accurate, up-to-date background reports on the person you want to date.  Dating Backgrounds does not deal in unnecessary or unhelpful information, but rather gives you the knowledge you need to make educated decisions regarding your potential short- or long-term beau.

Bottom line:  We're committed to the education and protection of our clients!

Next time, how the 1st page of Google when looking for a date background check can be dangerous.

in Blog

Juggling all the uncertainties of being a divorced Mom is difficult enough; that’s typically the case for most women, but certainly not all. However, throw on top of that pile the emotional and psychological pressure that accompanies the decision to begin dating again.

It’s the 21st Century, so the most efficient and least intimidating option for most divorced women is the Internet. Find a dating site you like, create a profile and voila, instant dating. But there’s still some uncertainty: Who is this guy, really? Are these sites really safe? Am I really safe doing this?

Here are a few questions and answers to put your mind at ease and ensure a certain degree of confidence as you wade into the dating pool.

Why and when do I conduct a dating background check?

As you press “enter” on your PC and post your own profile, the last thing you need to encounter is a fraudulent profile, someone looking to take advantage of you. There are some risks, to be sure, even financial scams or even worse, a physical assault.

Being a divorced Mom entails an even higher level of security. You're not just protecting yourself, but your children, a grandparent who may be helping you care for the kids, a nanny or other loved ones in your household.

That’s why we like to recommend a three-date rule. You probably don’t want to spend the money involved in checking out everyone you meet online. However, the three-date rule entails you corresponding with someone online, by email, instant message, or chatting a number of times by phone. (That’s date #1.) Then you meet in a public place such as a coffee shop. Maybe a second cup of coffee or possibly dinner, always in a well lit, very public restaurant. At this point, perhaps you believe you have met a potential life partner. That’s when you contact us at Dating Backgrounds.

How do you positively identify someone?

If you are corresponding with let’s say, Robert Johnson, how can we do a background search without any positive identification or information about his identity? (I would assume that there’s more than one Robert Johnson in your area who’s online.

For this to be accomplished you need at the least an address or a date of birth, which is even better. However, early in a relationship that may not be obtainable. In most cases, a complete address will suffice. We can then match the person’s name with an address and obtain a date of birth and a social security number through consumer reporting agencies. We cannot provide you with either due to privacy laws, but we can use the information to positively ID your date. Once we know who we are looking into, we can delve further.

Why should I only trust a professional, licensed private investigator?

Nearly all of the big dating services do nothing to verify the information of someone you may be interested in romantically. In my experience, they don’t even verify that the person behind the profile is from this country.

A licensed professional has access to information that the automated websites do not.

Our license allows us to verify the person behind the profile is from this country and isn’t from a foreign country attempting to run a financial scam, or been convicted for drunk driving, or had a restraining order placed against him. You get the idea.

How is the information interpreted by Dating Backgrounds?

I like to say this is more about what we don't find. Most people have a clean background and knowing this can provide you with the peace of mind you need to pursue a dating relationship.

In our research we check not only criminal convictions, and many times arrests, we also check civil filings. In this type of research we many times find a long history of lawsuits, bankruptcies and other financial matters that may make you question the integrity of your potential partner. However, if we find one lawsuit that’s dragged on in the courts, there may very well be a second party that is causing most of the problems. So looking at all the information we find subjectively can make the difference between moving forward and stepping away.

What’s most important is that you understand that YOU have the power to date safely and protect yourself and your loved ones by conducting a Dating Background Check. The real question is who do you trust to help you learn important details about someone before that third date? We’d like to think that our professionals at Dating Backgrounds have the experience and knowledge to help you sleep better at night – alone, or perhaps with someone you care about by your side!

Through my extensive research into dating websites, matchmaking professionals and the "21st Century dating scene" overall, I have run into individuals who believe that hiring a Private Investigator to conduct a dating background check is an intrusion into a potential partner's privacy.

Some have even compared it to cyberstalking. And I said, "Cyberstalking? Really?"

As a professional, let me be clear: Initiating a dating background check on another online dater is NOT cyberstalking.

Cyberstalking is the online harassment of one individual by another. A cyberstalker has a malicious agenda that may include identity theft, false accusations, bribery, slander, defamation of character...the sordid list could go on and on. Further, cyberstalking is considered a criminal offense, and can result in a restraining order, probation, or even jail time for the assailant.

By contrast, a dating background check is an important way, through publicly available criminal, civil and other records, to ensure the safety of innocent online daters who might fall prey to individuals with salacious or physically harmful intentions. Checking is not stalking! It's "fact gathering," and gathering all the facts about someone you meet online for personal reasons is simply prudent and careful.

From another perspective, consider that very few people, if any, would balk at hearing about how a concerned parent ran a background check on a potential nanny. In that case, the intention of a background check is to ensure the safety of the children, the family and the home.

Similarly, dating background checks allow online daters to safeguard themselves. They are an excellent way to confirm whether the person you might begin dating or engage in a serious relationship with is, in fact, who he or she claims to be.

And don't let someone convince you that engaging a Private Investigator is problematic or threatening in some way. To the contrary, it should give you peace of mind – because all of the information we gather to compile our reports comes from public sources best known to Investigators. There is no violation of privacy involved in what we do – ever!

Private Investigators are especially valuable in performing background checks because we have the experience, knowledge and access that most other background search companies do not. Plus, other companies and online services lack the resources to truly educate their clients about online dating safety and, ultimately, protect them and their loved ones.

At Dating Backgrounds, we take our jobs as Private Investigators seriously – and that means stopping any stalker dead in his tracks.
